English Writing for the Big Exam in Anhui
Hi everyone! My name is Lily and I'm a 4th grader. Today I want to tell you all about the English writing part of the really important high school exam called the Gaokao in Anhui province. It's a huge deal for all the older students!
Every year, the Gaokao has an English writing section where students have to write an essay on a given topic. The topics can be about all kinds of things - sometimes they ask your opinion on an issue, other times they want you to describe an experience or tell a story.
My big sister just took the Gaokao last year, so she told me all about the writing prompts from recent years. In 2022, one prompt was \"If you could travel back in time, which period would you visit and why?\" My sister wrote about wanting to go to ancient Egypt to see the pyramids being built. She said she had to use lots of descriptive language to paint a picture in the reader's mind.
In 2021, there was a prompt like \"What qualities do you think a good teacher should have?\" My sister discussed how teachers need to be patient, encouraging, and make learning fun. She gave some examples of her favorite teachers over the years. The year before that in 2020, one weird prompt was \"If you were an animal, which one would you choose to be?\" My sister picked being a dolphin so she could swim freely in the ocean. She talked about how intelligent and playful dolphins are. Sometimes the prompts are more serious. In 2019, students had to write about \"The importance of protecting the
environment for future generations.\" My sister wrote a lot about climate change, pollution, and conservation efforts. She said she tried to persuade the reader why this issue matters.
Other times, the topics are pretty open-ended. Like in 2018, one prompt was simply \"Describe a piece of advice that made a big impact on you.\" My sister recounted when her grandpa told her \"If you get knocked down, keep getting back up.\"
No matter what the prompt is, you have to plan your essay carefully. My sister said she would brainstorm ideas and examples first, then organize them into an outline with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion. Using good
vocabulary, varied sentences, and proper grammar is really important too.
The graders are looking for essays that respond well to the prompt, have a logical structure, provide relevant details and examples, and use English accurately. It's not easy, but my sister practiced a lot with model essays her teacher provided.
Writing well is just one part of the exam, but it's a crucial skill for English learning. Who knows, maybe I'll have to write about my favorite childhood memories or strategies for success when it's my turn for the Gaokao in a few years! For now, I'll just keep working hard at school.

You see, every year, the smarty-pants test makers come up with these crazy writing prompts that the high schoolers have to answer. And let me tell you, some of them are wild! Like, one year they asked the students to write about what they would do if they found a magic lamp with a genie inside. How awesome is that? I'd wish for a lifetime supply of candy, of course!
But it's not all fun and games. The Gaokao is a really big deal in China, and the English writing part is super important for getting into a good university. So the teachers and students have to take it pretty seriously, even if the prompts are kind of silly sometimes.

And let me tell you, some of those samples are pretty impressive! They've got all kinds of fancy vocabulary, complex sentence structures, and deep insights that would make even the most seasoned writer jealous. But you know what? Even though the sample essays are awesome, I think the real gems are the actual student responses. Sure, some of them might be a bit rough around the edges, but they're also full of heart, personality, and unique perspectives that you just can't get from a carefully crafted sample.
Like, one year, a student wrote about how their grandma's homemade dumplings were the most important thing in their life, because they represented family, tradition, and unconditional love. How sweet is that? Or another time, a
student talked about their dream of becoming an astronaut and exploring the vast unknown of space. It was like a little glimpse into their wildest hopes and aspirations!
And you know what's really cool? Sometimes, the teachers and test makers will actually publish collections of the best student essays, so everyone can see the amazing ideas and writing skills that these kids have. It's like a little window into the minds of China's future leaders, writers, and thinkers.
So, even though the Anhui Gaokao English writing prompts and sample essays might seem a bit overwhelming at first, they're actually pretty darn awesome when you stop and think about it. They're a chance for kids to flex their creative muscles, express their deepest thoughts and feelings, and maybe even inspire others along the way.

Nobody likes going through hard times and facing adversity. Challenges like failing an exam, losing a loved one, or dealing with an unexpected setback are painful and stressful experiences. However, I truly believe that working through difficulties can be one of life's greatest teachers for personal growth.
When we encounter adversity, we're forced to confront our fears, doubts and limitations head-on. It pushes us outside our comfort zones and causes us to dig deep for resilience, courage and perseverance. Inevitably, we learn valuable lessons about our own character strengths and abilities that may have otherwise stayed hidden.
For example, a close friend of mine was devastated after her parents divorced last year. But through that immense adversity, she discovered an inner reservoir of maturity and independence that allowed her to take more responsibility at home while still excelling at school. She emerged from that challenging situation stronger and more self-reliant.
Overcoming adversity also provides a tremendous sense of confidence and self-belief that makes future obstacles feel less daunting. Like climbing a mountain, the first big ascent is always the hardest. But once we've developed the skills and mindset to conquer one peak, we're much better equipped for the next challenge.
Of course, that's not to say we should go looking for problems or trivialize the very real pain and suffering caused by extreme adversity like poverty, violence or illness. However, when unavoidable adversity arises, adopting a growth mindset and being open to the potential life lessons can be invaluable for personal development.
So while nobody enjoys adversity in the moment, I believe it allows us to develop some of our most defining qualities like determination, wisdom and self-awareness. The challenges that life throws our way, while unwelcome, can truly be an exceptional teacher to help us keep growing as people. My Big Brother's Struggles with the Gaokao English Exam Hi friends! I'm Xiao Ming, a 3rd grader from Hefei, the capital of Anhui Province. I have an older brother named Da Ming who is a senior in high school this year. He has been super stressed lately because of the big university entrance exam called the Gaokao that he has to take soon. The Gaokao is a really important test in China that determines what university you can attend. My brother wants to go to a top university, so he has been studying really hard, especially for the English part of the exam.
You see, the English exam section of the Gaokao is no joke! It tests your reading comprehension, writing, grammar, vocabulary, and more. One of the biggest challenges is the writing portion where you have to write an essay on a given prompt or topic. The graders are super strict and expect a certain level of English writing skills.
Da Ming has been practicing English essay writing like crazy using past Gaokao prompts. He showed me some of the topics
from previous years' exams in Anhui, and wow, they are not easy for a high schooler! Let me share some examples with you: 2022 Prompt: \"Actions speak louder than words.\" Write an essay to discuss the implications of this saying.
2021 Prompt: What qualities should a good teacher possess? Provide specific examples to support your arguments.
2020 Prompt: Advances in technology have made our lives more convenient but have also created new problems. Discuss the pros and cons.
2019 Prompt: Some people believe that participation in team sports helps build good character. Do you agree or disagree? Use reasons and examples to support your view. Tough topics, right? Da Ming really struggled with some of those prompts. For the 2022 one about \"actions speaking louder than wordso actually help people in need rather than just saying you care about an issue. But his teacher said his examples were too basic. For the 2021 teacher qualities prompt, Da Ming described qualities like being patient, having good subject knowledge, and being able to explain things clearly. However, his outline wasn't organized very well according to his teacher.
The 2020 technology prompt allowed Da Ming to discuss the convenience of things like mobile apps and smart homes, but also the overdependence on devices and internet addiction as negatives. His teacher said the ideas were there but he needed to improve his vocabulary usage.
As for the 2019 sports prompt, Da Ming argued that team sports help build qualities like discipline, teamwork, and resilience from an early age. However, his examples from personal experience playing basketball weren't fleshed out enough according to the teacher's feedback.
Seeing my poor brother struggle so much made me want to improve my own English writing abilities early on! I started reading simplifiedEnglish short stories and drafting very basic 5 sentence essays on fun topics like my favorite foods or cartoon characters.
I know it will take a lot of practice, but I'm determined to master English essay writing way before I have to take the terrifying Gaokao exam myself. I understand now why so many Chinese students attend English cram schools from a young age to get a headstart.
My brother's English teachers have shared some sample high-scoring Gaokao essays with him to analyze as well. Maybe
I'll ask Da Ming to showme those sometime as good examples to learn from once my skills develop a bit more. From what I understand, the graders look for clear and logical organization, specific examples and details, academic vocabulary, and good grammar in a Gaokao English essay.

English Writing on the Gaokao in Anhui Province
Hi there! My name is Xiaoming and I'm a 5th grader here in Anhui. I love learning about all sorts of things, especially English. My big sister is going to take the gaokao college entrance exam soon, so I've been really interested in learning about the English writing section. Let me tell you what I've found out!
The English writing part of the gaokao is pretty important. It tests how well students can express their thoughts and ideas clearly in written English. Every year, there are different writing prompts or topics that students have to write an essay about.
From what I've seen, the topics can be all sorts of different things - sometimes it's about society, culture, education, the environment, or even science and technology. Other times, it might ask students to discuss a famous quote or give their views on an abstract concept like success or happiness. There's no way to study exactly what the topic will be, so students have to be prepared to write about anything!
My sister showed me some sample essays from past years to give me an idea. One year, the prompt was \"What qualities do you think a good leader should possess?\" Students had to plan and write a well-structured essay discussing the important traits of leadership.
Another sample was about whether schools should require students to perform community service. That seems like a really interesting topic to me! I can see both sides - community service helps people learn important values, but it also takes time away from studies. If I had to write that essay, I might say that some community service should be required, but not too much so it doesn't become a burden.

Using varied sentence structures and higher-level vocabulary is important too.
It seems really challenging to write a high-scoring essay in the time allowed during the actual test. My sister has been practicing by doing timed writing practice using released prompts from previous years. She's getting pretty good at it! I may only be in elementary school, but learning about the gaokao writing section has made me even more excited to continue improving my English skills. Who knows, maybe I'll end up writing an amazing gaokao essay one day when it's my turn! For now, I'll just keep working hard, reading and writing as much as I can. English is super fun and important.
