Dear Billy,

Hi! It's me, your best friend Tommy. I hope you are feeling a little bit better today. I miss you so much at school. It's no fun without my buddy to play checkers and trade Pokémon cards with at recess. Mrs. Johnson's math lessons are super boring without you there to make funny faces and get us both in trouble for laughing!

I'm really sorry to hear you have to stay home from school because you're sick. Getting sick is the worst, isn't it? I remember last year when I got chickenpox, I thought I was going to go crazy being stuck inside for two whole weeks. No playing outside, no seeing my friends - it was torture! At least with chickenpox I got to watch a ton of TV and my mom let me eat ice cream for breakfast. What kind of sickness do you have anyway?

Whatever you have, I'm sure it's just terrible. Lying in bed all day coughing and sneezing with a runny nose and fever doesn't sound like much fun at all. I feel really bad for you, buddy. Don't

worry though, I've got some good advice that should help you get through this! You're going to be back at school before you know it.

First of all, you have to make sure you get lots and lots of rest. That means no staying up late playing video games or reading comics with a flashlight under your covers. Go to bed super early every night and sleep as late as your parents will let you in the morning. Sleeping is healing, that's what my mom always tells me. She says while you're sleeping, your body can focus all its energy on fighting off the bad germs making you sick.

Speaking of germs, you also need to drink tons of fluids to flush those nasties out of your system. Drink lots of water, juice, soup - anything liquid, really. Just stay away from soda because the sugar and caffeine in it can actually dehydrate you more. Yuck! My favorite is my mom's chicken noodle soup. Maybe your mom will make you some too if you ask really nicely.

Another really important thing is to take all the medicine the doctor tells you to. Even if it tastes bad, you have to take it because that's what helps make your symptoms go away. Unless you want to stay sick forever? No way! My little brother Timmy once got sick but didn't want to take his medicine because he

said it tasted like dog food. My mom had to hold him down and squirt it in his mouth! He was mad but at least he got better. Here's a tip - if you have to take really yucky medicine, ask your parents for a popsicle or a big glass of fruit punch to get the bad taste out of your mouth after. Taking medicine is way easier when you have something good to look forward to. Maybe they'll even let you have a small bowl of ice cream if you're really good!

Don't just lie in bed all day either, as tempting as that sounds. It's important to get a little bit of activity and movement so you don't end up too weak and out of shape. Take short little walks around the house or do some light stretching every few hours. Just don't overdo it or you could end up even more tired. Baby steps, Billy boy!

This one is very important - stay away from other sick people as much as possible! You don't want to catch something else on top of what you've already got. My grandpa is always getting colds because he goes to play poker with his friends at the nursing home and they're always coughing and sneezing all over each other. Not smart!

Finally, my biggest suggestion is to give yourself little treats to make being sick more fun. Build a awesome pillow/blanket

fort in the living room and move in there for a while. Forts are the best! Set up with your portable DVD player, video games, art supplies, whatever entertains you. Just don't make too much of a mess or your parents will make you dismantle it.

You could also try begging your parents for a new toy or game to play with while you're recovering. If you're really really good, they just might surprise you! Let them take care of you - bring you breakfast in bed, fluff up your pillows, read you stories, whatever you want. There are definitely some perks to being a sick kid as long as you milk it for all it's worth!

Well, that's all the advice I can think of for now. Just buck up, Billy, and I know you'll be back at school in no time. We're all counting the days until you get better! I'll say an extra prayer for you at bedtime tonight. Get well soon, buddy. I miss you! Your friend, Tommy

Dear Timmy,

Hi! It's me, your best friend Johnny. I'm so sorry to hear that you're sick and stuck at home in bed. That must be really boring

and no fun at all! I miss seeing you at school and playing together at recess. Get well soon, buddy!

Being sick is the worst, isn't it? I remember last year when I had a bad cold and couldn't go to school for a whole week. My mom made me stay in bed and I thought I was going to go crazy from boredom! But you know what helped pass the time? I'm going to give you some ideas of things you can do to keep yourself entertained while you're resting and recovering. Hopefully it makes being sick a little less terrible!

First off, you've got to make yourself a cozy sick bed. Pile up all your blankets and snuggle in. I like to build myself a little nest with pillows all around me. You can grab some of your stuffed animals to keep you company too. My teddy bear Mr. Ruffers was my sick buddy. Make sure you've got tissues and your favorite drinks nearby so you don't have to get up.

Once you've got your sick bed all set up, you need stuff to do so you don't lose your mind from boredom. One of my favorite things was having my parents read my favorite books to me over and over again. Maybe your mom or dad can read the Harry Potter books to you! If your throat is too sore, you could listen to the audiobooks instead. Or you could listen to fun music.

Speaking of audiobooks, another awesome thing to do when you're sick is listen to podcasts or watch shows and movies. I went through lots of TV shows when I was sick. My favorites were the silly cartoons because they kept me laughing which helped me feel better. You could have an animated movie marathon!

If you get tired of just watching things, you'll need activities to keep your hands busy too. Coloring books and comics are perfect for that. Or you could work on arts and crafts projects likemaking get well soon cards to send to other sick kids. Wouldn't that be a nice idea? Just take it easy and don't get too messy since you're stuck in bed.

Another great boredom buster is playing video games or coding games if you're into that. I had so much fun battling the bad guys and rescuing princesses from my sick bed. You could host a virtual gaming sleepover and play online with your friends so you don't feel so lonely! Just be careful not to get too riled up and make yourself more sick.

When you need a break from electronics, you could juggle or do simple magic tricks in bed. That's always good for some laughs! Or get someone to set up a sick bed library with all your

books and magazines surrounding you so you can read and learn new things.

One of the most important things is to make sure you're drinking lots of liquids and eating when you can so you'll get stronger and be back on your feet soon. My mom brought me all my favorites like chicken noodle soup, popsicles, ice cream, and hot chocolate when I was sick. Don't forget to thank your parents for taking such good care of you! Maybe you could have a movie night and snuggle on the couch with them after you're feeling better.

Well Timmy, those are all my tips for how to cope with being sick at home. I really hope you start feeling better very soon. Just take it easy, get lots of rest, and keep yourself busy with fun activities. Before you know it, you'll be back at school and we can play knights and dragons again at recess! Get better fast, buddy! Your friend, Johnny

Dear Michael,

Hi! It's me, your friend Jack. I heard from our classmates that you have been out sick from school for almost two weeks now. I'm really sorry to hear that you are feeling under the weather. Being sick is no fun at all! I miss seeing you at school and playing together at recess. The classroom just isn't the same without you. I hope this letter finds you feeling a little bit better. I wanted to share some ideas with you on things that might help you get well soon. My mom always says listening to advice from friends can be just as helpful as listening to doctors sometimes! So here are my best tips for you:

First off, you have to make sure you are drinking lots and lots of fluids. My dad says when you are sick, your body needs extra water and liquids to help flush out the bad germs. He recommends drinking water, juice, sports drinks, soup broths, and even popsicles! Anything liquid is good. Just stay away from sodas because those have too much sugar. My favorite drinks when I'm sick are orange juice and chicken noodle soup. Next tip - get lots of rest! Don't try to be a tough guy and fight through being sick. Your body needs sleep to heal and recover. Make sure you are sleeping as much as possible during the day and night. My mom lets me take naps and lounge around watching movies when I'm home sick from school. She

says resting is the best medicine. No running around or playing hard until you are 100% better.

Another important thing is to make sure you are eating good, healthy foods. Loading up on fruits, vegetables, proteins, and whole grains will give your body the nutrients it needs to battle the sickness. My aunt always makes me eat chicken noodle soup, yogurt, bananas, and oatmeal when I have a cold or flu. Those foods help give you energy and vitamins. Maybe ask your parents for those types of healthy meals and snacks.

You should also be taking any medicine that your doctor prescribes. Don't try to be brave and avoid the medicine - it's there to help you get better! Whether it's liquid medicine, pills, or even antibiotics if you have an infection, make sure to take all the doses. My pediatrician says finishing all the medicine ensures the sickness goes away completely.

Here's an important one - stay away from lots of TV, video games, and screens when you are sick. I know it's tempting to just lay around looking at your iPad all day, but too much screen time can actually make you feel worse. The lights and sounds might bother your head if you have a headache or migraine. My parents only let me do a little bit of screen time when I'm home

sick from school. Mostly I'm encouraged to just lay in bed and read books or listen to podcasts to rest my eyes and brain. Another good idea is to make sure you are dressing in comfy, loose clothes. You don't want to be wearing tight jeans or scratchy sweaters. My mom dresses me in loose sweatpants and a soft t-shirt when I'm under the weather. It's important to keep your body temperature regular too - not too hot or too cold. Lightweight blankets are perfect for cuddling up on the couch or in your bed.

One of the most important tips is to have a positive mindset and stay optimistic! Tell yourself that you WILL get better soon. Maybe make a fun countdown calendar to look forward to rejoining your friends. I like to daydream about all the games I'll get to play and treats I'll get to eat when I'm no longer sick. Thinking happy thoughts will help heal your body faster. My final piece of advice is don't rush back to school or activities too quickly after being sick. Your body will still be a little weak and you don't want to relapse and get sick all over again. Maybe ask your parents if you can have a half-day or two ofuntimed homework when you first go back to school. You should also wait a while before doing really active sports or

running around a lot to make sure your energy is all the way back. Easing back into your normal routine is important.

Well Michael, those are my best suggestions for getting over your sickness as fast as possible! Having been stuck at home sick many times myself, I know how unpleasant it can be. But I hope following some of this advice will help get you back on your feet and feeling like your normal, energetic self again soon. We all miss you at school and can't wait for you to rejoin us. Just focus on resting up and don't try to rush your recovery. Before you know it, you'll be healthy and we can spend our recesses playing kick ball and swinging on the monkey bars together! Feel better!! Your friend, Jack

Dear Billy,

I heard you got really sick and have to stay home from school for a while. That stinks! Being stuck at home when all your friends are at school is no fun at all. But don't worry, I'm going to

give you some tips to help you feel better and have a good time while you're resting up.

First off, make sure you listen to your parents and doctor about taking your medicine. I know medicine can taste totally gross, but it will help you get better faster so you can come back to school. Maybe you can pretend you're a robot putting fuel in your engine or something! Whenever I take yukky medicine, I hold my nose and gulp it down really fast and then have a snack or juice ready to get rid of the bad taste. My little brother cries but that's for babies!

Another important thing is to get lots of rest. I know it's tempting to stay up late playing video games when you're home, but your body needs sleep to fight off that horrible sickness junk. Take naps during the day too! My mom makes me lie down after lunch even if I'm not tired. She says it's good to just relax and let my body recharge. Maybe you can have your parents read you stories or play quiet music to help you fall asleep faster. Just don't have any screaming monster toys in your bed!

While you're resting, there are lots of fun things you can do besides video games so you don't get bored. I'll give you some ideas:

• Read comics or bust out those cool Lego instruction booklets - bet you could build the craziest spaceships! • Do Mad Libs or other silly word games

• Make paper airplanes and have contests to see who can throw them the farthest

• Draw pictures or cartoons about your favorite superheroes • Write a short story or comic book (get your parents to help if you get stuck!)

• Put on a puppet show for your family with stuffed animals • Listen to audiobooks or make up funny songs

• Build a fort out of blankets and pillows and camp out in your room

If you do feel a little better, you could do some crafts or science experiments too. My friend Jack and I like making volcanoes out of baking soda and vinegar. Just make sure to put down towels first in case of lava flows! Or you could take an empty two-liter bottle and make a bird feeder by poking holes in it and covering the outside with peanut butter then bird seed. Hang it from a tree and watch all the birds come visit! Or do that baking soda and food coloring fizzy thing to make cool potions.

Probably the best medicine though is having people visit you. I'll totally come over sometime with a new comic book and maybe some good DVDs if your parents say it's ok. If you have brothers or sisters, maybe they can hang out with you and play games. You could have competitions to see who can build the tallest Lego tower or best paper airplane. If you get REALLY bored, you could even let them paint your nails or put goofy barrettes in your hair! I'd pay a million dollars to see that. Anyway, I hope you start feeling better really, really soon Billy. Being sick is the worst, but think of it this way - you get to be a couch potato and not do any homework for a while! I'll save you a seat on the bus and make sure nobody takes your desk while you're gone. Can't wait to have you back so we can play kickball at recess!

Get well soon, buddy! Your friend, Jamie

Dear Tommy,

Hi! It's me, your friend Jake. I heard you got really sick and have to stay home from school for a while. That stinks! Being stuck at home is no fun, especially when you're not feeling good. But don't worry, I'm gonna give you some tips to help you get through this. My dog Rufus was sick a couple months ago and I had to take really good care of him. So I know a thing or two about helping sick buddies!

First off, you gotta rest up as much as you can. I know it's boring just lying around all day, but your body needs that rest to fight off the sickness germs inside you. Try to sleep a lot and take naps whenever you feel tired. And don't try to do too much physical stuff like running around or playing hard - that will just wear you out. Just chill on the couch or in your bed and take it easy.

Next up, you need to drink a ton of fluids! Fluids are so important when you're sick to keep you from getting dehydrated. My mom always makes me drink lots of water, juice, soup, things like that. Some of the best drinks are orange juice (that vitamin C is great), chicken noodle soup (the broth has tons of fluids) and my favorite - hot chocolate with marshmallows! Just try to avoid soda and sugary drinks. Those don't have the nutrients your body craves.

You also have to eat healthy foods to keep your energy up. I know eating probably doesn't sound too appealing when you're queasy, but you need those vitamins! Try things like applesauce, bananas, rice, toast, crackers and yogurt. Those are gentle on the tummy but give you protein and nutrients. My mom says protein helps wounds and cuts heal faster too. How cool is that?

Another vital tip is to keep cleaning up after yourself. Blow your nose a lot with tissues and throw them out right away. If you cough or sneeze, do it into your elbow area, not your hands (my teacher taught me that one). And make sure to wash your hands a ton so you don't spread germs around your house. Using hand sanitizer is great too.

Most importantly, do lots of stuff to keep your mind occupied so you don't go stir crazy at home! Read books and magazines, do puzzles, color, play videogames, watch movies, etc. Or make get well cards to send to your friends - I bet they'd love that! You could also ask your parents to get you a new game or toy to play with while you're stuck at home. Having new stuff to focus on really helps the time go by.

Oh, and don't forget to take all your yucky medicine that your parents give you! I know it probably tastes nasty, but you have to take it to start feeling better. Maybe you can ask for a

treat after, like ice cream or candy, to help the gross taste go away. The medicines really do work though, so just grin and bear it.

Well Tommy, those are my tips for you! I can't wait until you're back at school again. We all miss you a ton and it's no fun without you here. Just follow my advice and before you know it, you'll be right back at your desk, all better. Let me know if you need anything else, okay? Feel better soon, buddy! Your friend, Jake

My Sick Friend Jessica

Hi! My name is Emily and I'm 10 years old. I'm in 5th grade at Oakdale Elementary School. One of my best friends is Jessica. We've been super close since kindergarten when we were just 5 years old!

A few weeks ago, Jessica got really sick. She had a bad flu with a fever, cough, and she was throwing up a lot. It was so yucky! Her mom had to take her to the doctor and everything.

The doctor said she had influenza Type A and had to stay home from school to rest and get better.

I felt so bad for Jessica being sick like that. It's no fun missing school and not being able to play or hang out with friends. I decided to write her a get well letter to cheer her up while she was stuck at home in bed. I'll tell you what I wrote: Dear Jessica,

Hi bestie! It's me, Emily. I'm so so sorry you've been sick with that horrible flu. I can't even imagine how yucky you must have felt with a fever, coughing, throwing up, and all those other bad symptoms. I really hope you start feeling a lot better very soon! School hasn't been the same without you here. It's been way too quiet in class without you whispering silly jokes and making me laugh. Recess and lunch have been kind of boring too without my BFF to play with. Everyone misses your smiling face around here!

Since you've been out sick, I've been taking great notes in all your classes so you don't get too behind. I'll give you my notebook to copy from when you come back. I've also been saving any handouts, worksheets, or assignments the teachers

gave out so you can make those up too. Don't worry about missing too much - I've got you covered, bestie!

Being sick is just the worst, but I have some suggestions that might help you feel a little better until you're all healthy again: Make sure to get lots and lots of rest! Sleep as much as you can so your body has energy to fight off that nasty flu virus. Drink plenty of fluids like water, juice, broth, or electrolyte drinks. It's easy to get dehydrated from fevers, throwing up, etc. Fluids will help keep you hydrated.

Have some yummy soups or ice pops if you can keep them down. The liquids are good for staying hydrated and the cool treats can soothe a sore throat.

Take baths or showers with lots of steam to help clear up stuffed noses and sinus pressure from the flu. The moisture can loosen mucus too.

Watch movies, read books, or play quiet games to keep your mind occupied so you don't feel as bored and miserable just lying around.

Get lots of TLC from your parents! Having them take care of you with medicines, fluids, soft blankets and more must be helping you get comfy while you recover.

I really hope those tips give you some ideas to feel a little bit better. They always help me when I've had colds, flu, or other sicknesses in the past. You've just gotta be patient, get that rest, and let your body get over this flu bug.

I'll keep you in my thoughts and can't wait till you're back at school 100% healthy! It'll be so great to have my funny, energetic BFF back. I miss you so much! Please let me know if you need anything at all - I'm here for you, bestie! Feel better soon! Your bestie forever, Emily

That's the letter I wrote to cheer Jessica up while she's out sick from school. I tried to remind her that everyone misses her smiling face around here and that I'm saving her makeup work so she doesn't stress. Then I gave her some tips I remember being helpful when I've been sick before - like drinking lots, taking steamy baths, and watching movies.

I also made sure to let her know I'm thinking about her and can't wait until she's all better so my BFF can come back. I really do miss Jessica a ton while she's out of school sick. She's my

biggest buddy and it's just no fun without her laughing, joking, and playing together every day.

I really hope my get well letter helps cheer Jessica up and gives her some good ideas for things that might make her feel a little bit better until this awful flu goes away completely. We'llboth be so happy when she's finally back at school healthy! Then we can play at recess, swap fun stories about our time apart, and just be our normal goofy selves together again. I can't wait! That's my letter to my sick friend Jessica. What did you think? Have you ever had to write a get well letter to a friend or family member who was really sick before? What kinds of things did you say to cheer them up? I'd love to hear your ideas and experiences too! Getting letters from friends when you're sick can be just the mood brightener you need. Thanks for reading about my letter to my bestie!
