五、阅读理解(5题)

34.A proverb(谚语) allegedly(据称) from ancient China was widely spread in the west:If you want to be happy for a few hours, go to get drunk; if you want a lifetime happiness, take up gardening. The reason for the last option is this: Gardening is not only useful, but it helps you to identify yourself with nature, and thus brings you new joy each day besides improving your health.

A research of a US university that I’ve read gives a definition of happiness as what makes a person feel comfortably pleased. To put it specifically, happiness is an active state of mind where one thinks one’s life is meaningful, satisfactory and comfortable. This should be something lasting rather than transitory.

Lots of people regard it the happiest to be at leisure. But according to a study, it is not a person with plenty of leisure but one at work that feels happy, especially those busy with work having little time for leisure. Happiness does not spell(意味着) gains one is after but a desire to harvest what one is seeking for. People often do not cherish what they already have but yearn for what they cannot get. That is somewhat like a man indulging in fond dreams of numerous lovers while reluctant to settle down with the woman beside him. Happiness is a game balancing between two ends—what one has and what one wishes for, e.g. one’s dream and the possibility to realize it. The study comes to this conclusion: A happy man is one who aims high but never forgets his actual situation; one who meets challenges that tap his ability and potentiality; one who is proud of his achievements and the recognition given to him. He has self-respect and self-confidence; treasures his own identity and loves freedom. He is sociable and enjoys wide-range communication with others; he is helpful and ready to accept assistance. He knows he is able to endure sufferings and frustrations; he is sensible enough to get fun from daily chores. He is a man capable of love and passion

According to the passage, gardening can bring lifelong happiness because() A.gardening is a profitable business

B.it can strengthen gardener’s ability to remark nature C.gardener can enjoy very happy marriage

D.gardener can build good relationship with nature

35.The woman’s patient stopped telling her story to most people because()

36.Passage Three

In your car you may have a cell phone, a telephone also known as a mobile phone that you can carry around and use anywhere. On your way, you may feel coordinated and enjoy your hands-free phone talking while driving. But recent studies suggest that it isn’t the dialing or the arm waving that makes driving while talking on a cell phone dangerous. It is the yakking itself—or more precisely, the continuous conversation with someone who isn’t present—that makes. David Strayer, a Utah psychologist, says your driving performance while talking on a cell phone is weakened at levels comparable to, or worse than, driving with a blood alcohol level of 0.08, which is the legal limit in most states of America.

Using a driving-training simulator, Strayer and his colleagues compared the attention levels and response time of 110 drivers in various situations. In dense traffic, cell phone users were about 20 percent slower to respond to sudden hazards than other drivers, and they were about twice as likely to drive into the back of a braking car in front of them. Cell phone drivers are obtaining less than 50 percent of the visual information that non-cell drivers are getting, says Strayer. Looking and seeing are not one and the same. By contrast, the researchers found that listening to the radio or conversing with passengers is not as hazardous. When a dangerous situation arises, the driver and passengers put their conversation on pause, Strayer says.

Whether talking with a passenger or someone on a cell phone, however, people are less able to recall the details of a conversation carried on while driving. So it might not be good for your economic health to discuss investment strategies with your agent while either of you is driving, Strayer adds lastly

According to the recent studies, which of the following makes driving dangerous()

A.A cell phone dialing by the driver B.The driver’s endless arm waving

C.The driver’s continuous cell phone talking D.The absence of another phone speaker

39.见解析Part-time Jobs In contemporary society, college students' taking part-time jobs has become a hot topic. It has a great influence on their life. I

believe there are both benefits and drawbacks. Clearly, in addition to getting an income, college students taking part-time jobs may enjoy a more exciting lifestyle. as they can meet people from all walks of life and develop a sense of responsibility which can't be learned in the classroom. On the other hand, the negative effects of part-time jobs are also obvious. Students who take part-time jobs may spend less time focusing on study, and if they seek to excel in both the part-time jobs and study, the busy life they lead may put their health at risk. Besides, the society is much more complicated than they have expected, and they sometimes may be exposed to danger. In my opinion, college students ought to keep a balance between academic study and part-time jobs, and always bear in mind that a student's priority is to acquire knowledge at school.
