Gabi just finished her third year of high school. However, at the beginning of June, she received her report card in the mail, she learned that she failed a term of algebra(代数). This meant she had to go to summer school this vacation.
Gabi was glad she had the chance to make up the class. She can’t move on to the next level in math if she doesn’t pass algebra. Summer school isn’t easy though. Gabi has to learn the material in 6 weeks instead of the 20 she had during the regular school year.

The Oil Lamp and the Lighthouse
On an island off the coast of a rocky shore stood a great lighthouse. During the day, the white walls of the lighthouse shined under the sunlight, while at night it burned a light for those at sea. Many people visited the lighthouse, and when they did, they talked about its size and strength and loved the beauty that it added to the surroundings. Some told its keeper how its light had saved them during a storm.
All loved the lighthouse except a little oil lamp that lived in the lighthouse. By day it hung forgotten at
the bottom of the stairs. When it was getting dark, it helped the keeper of the lighthouse make his way from the bottom of the stairs to his bedroom. It seemed to the oil lamp that he is not important. To his way of thinking, his shortcomings were clear because he was near one so much greater than he. Always, the oil lamp worked under this heaviness of heart.
Then one day, after a brilliant afternoon when many visitors had come to play on the sandy beach, there was a knock at the door. It was a boy, looking for a friend who was lost. The sun had set and what had seemed such friendly shores hours before was now dark and cold.
The keeper quickly took the boy inside and hugged him into a blanket. Then he reached to the wall and took down the little oil lamp. After carefully making sure that the tank was full of oil, the keeper lit the lamp and whispered, “Burn bright tonight, my dear friend. I cannot take the lighthouse with me. He serves his purpose here, but you were made for times like this. It is now that I need you most!”
At that moment, all of the oil lamp’s doubts were replaced by joy-- joy in knowing that here was something only he could do. All through the night, through bushes, the oil lamp burned brighter and more steadily than ever before. He had to; the keeper was depending on him. At last the lost boy was found and brought safely back to the lighthouse and his friend.
49. The little oil lamp didn’t like his job because _______. A. he thought the light house were more important than him B. he had to help the keeper make his way C. he was forgotten by all the people D. his work was heavy at heart
Never again did the oil lamp doubt his place or purpose. He had learned a great lesson that night: he was happiest and most useful being himself.
50. The oil lamp burned brighter and more steadily than ever before that night because _______. A. the boy depended on him to find his lost friend B. the keeper loved him more than the lighthouse C. he could replace the lighthouse D. he found his own value 51. What can we learn from the story? A. Every coin has two sides. B. Each one has his strong points. C. A friend in need is a friend indeed. D. Where there is a will, there is a way.
D
It does not matter who wins. We are told that from day one and it’s usually said by losers. If we do not care who wins, then why do we compete(竞赛)? Fun, experience, the chance to meet new people -- these
are the reasons we try to compete with each other.
People will compete over anything. Every Christmas, my neighbors and I have a little Christmas light competition. It is heaven for the electric company, but I think we give Will Rogers Airport a scare. It is bright enough to land a plane in our front yards. I admit that last year my neighbors won, but only because they bought all the lights Wal-Mart had before I could get there.
Personal competitions are great, but we get a little carried away. I cannot stand seeing coaches shout at kids playing sports. Who cares if someone loses and the other team wins?
I’m tired of people competing just to win. It happens not only in sports, but in music competitions, too. People auditioning(试音)for chair placement in certain bands can get really unfriendly. This year I did not audition for a certain band, but I went to auditions anyway. This was the first time I actually had the opportunity to understand the whole picture.
Other times I’ve been the person who was nervous and anxious. This time, I sat back and watched everyone else. I realized that the people who aren’t so good are terrified of the good people, and the good people are frightened that the bad people have taken lessons and can now make them feel terrible. Unless a person is on the outside looking in, I don’t think anyone realizes this.
Maybe competing is human nature, but we shouldn’t let it influence our judgment. Showing no respect to opponents(对手), letting competition become our life is not the meaning of competition.
A little competition is healthy, so it shouldn’t hurt anyone. If it does, someone somewhere needs to back off, find the good thing hidden inside, and try it again. Winning isn’t everything, and losing isn’t the end of the world.
52. The writer mentions his competition with his neighbors to __________. A. make excuses for his failure B. show his care about the airport
C. suggest his neighbor cheat in the competition D. show people really care about the result of competition
53. The underlined word “this” in Paragraph 5 refers to (指的是) ________. A. the rules of competition B. competitors’ effort to win C. the influence of competition on life D. the negative attitude to competition A. the writer failed the audition
B. competitors may be unfriendly to each other C. it is coaches who always mess up the match D. those who watch opponents calmly always win
55. Which of the following opinions does the writer probably agree? A. Competition for the job is difficult.
54. From the passage, we can learn that _______.
B. People don’t care about winning or losing. C. Competition is healthy, but it may do harm to us.
D. The disadvantages of competition weigh more than the benefits.

Hello, boys and girls. Welcome to National Museum of China. Let me introduce the Silk Road to you. The Silk Road is a historically important international trade route. It began during the Western Han Dynasty and has been a bridge between East and West for over 2,000 years. The ancient road started from Chang’an, now Xi’an and ended in Eastern Europe, near today’s Turkey and the Mediterranean Sea. It was about 6,500 kilometers long and went across one-fourth of the planet. The Silk Road got its name in the 19th century because Chinese silk used to be carried along this road. Silk, jade, ceramics and iron went west to Rome. And from the west came glass, gems and food like carrots. The Silk Road was very important to both China and the rest of the world. It was more than an ancient international trade route. Besides trade, knowledge about arts, science and literature, as well as crafts and technologies were shared across the Silk Road. In this way, languages and cultures developed and influenced each other. Today, China is trying to build the “21st Century Marine Silk Road”. With the help of BRF held in Beijing in May 2017, the dream of the Belt and Road is coming true.

M: Well, it says here that the machine jams if the paper is too thick or if the paper sticks together. If that happens, turn off your printer first and then carefully pull out the jammed paper. And remember to pull the paper in the direction of the paper path, because if you pull the paper backwards you might damage the
printer.
W: Right. Are there any other possible problems?
M: The motor overheats sometimes. If that happens, just turn it off for 15 minutes before you switch it on again.
W: OK. I’ve got it. Is there anything else I should know?
M: Yes, it is also wise to regularly clean your printer and its other parts. W: Thank you.
