For years people have enjoyed following the life of Garfield the cat. Garfield is a popular comic book character, known for being lazy and fat. But the cat was back in the news recently for something you might not expect.
A man in the United States changed the gender of Garfield to “none” on the cat’s Wikipedia ( 维 基 百 科 ) page. After that lots of people got angry and kept
changing Garfield’s Wikipedia page. They argued about whether the cat was a boy, girl or neither.
Wikipedia finally locked the page to stop people editing( 编辑) it. Jim Davis, Garfield’s creator, solved the argument.
“Garfield is male,” he simply told the Washington Post. The 71-year-old artist said he liked working with animals because they didn’t have to be old, young, boys or girls. He was angry that some people cared so much about Garfield’s gender.
It seems like quite an unnecessary argument to have. But it is not the only recent example of argument about gender.
To celebrate International Women’s Day in Australia earlier this year, the city of Melbourne made 10 traffic lights with a figure( 人形) dressed in a skirt. They were designed to celebrate Women’s Day and give them more confidence in public.
But not everyone thinks the idea is necessary. Some people think it is important for women to be treated fairly in Australia, but that this idea is silly.
“I’m all for doing anything we can for gender equity(公平), but really?” Melbourne mayor( 市 长)Robert Doyle told the Herald Sun. The mayor said this idea is more likely to be laughed at than bring respect to women.

A. It would bring respect to women.
B. It was not a good idea for gender equity.
C. It would give women more confidence in public. D. It would help women be treated fairly in Australia.

Detective fiction is popular in many countries. There are two kinds: stories in which private detectives solve a crime, usually a murder; and stories in which a police detective solve a crime. Both kinds of detective story are equally popular.
The first private detective---PI for private investigator in the USA---was probably Arson Lupin, a Frenchman. However, stories about this detective are not read nowadays. For most people the first, and perhaps the greatest, private detective, was the Englishman, Sherlock Holmes, a character created by the author Sir Author Conan Doyle. All the Sherlock Holmes stories have been translated into most languages. The best known is the Hound of the Baskervilles.
The first police detective was probably Sergeant Cuff who solves the crime in the Moonstone, one of the first detective novels in English. The author, Wilkie Collins, was a close friend of Charles Dickens, the best English novelists of all the time.
Crime fiction has been as popular in the USA as in the UK, and some of the most famous
American writers have written detective fiction. The most highly regarded is probably Raymond Chandler whose PI, Phillip Marlowe, is the archetype(典型的) private detective. Also popular, although not so well-written, are the Perry Mason novels by Erle Stanley Gardner.
After Conan Doyle, the most widely read private detective novelist is the English novelist Agatha Christie. She created two unforgettable characters--- Miss Marple and Hercule Poirot. Agatha Christie’s have also been translated into most languages.
Detective fiction is as popular today as it has ever been, probably because many novels have been adapted for television which introduced them to many people who do not usually read new detective crime fiction.

Maybe you think that many parents have a lot to learn about what their children are doing online. According to a recent survey by Symantec Company, which makes many kinds of security(安全)software for home and business computers, there's a \"huge difference between parents and their kids\".
Parents of children under the age of 18 were asked to estimate(估计)how much time their kids spent online each week. The parents said about three hours a week on average(平均).The kids-ages 8 to 17-who took the survey said they were spending an average of seven hours online each week.
\"I really think that's because of the time they spend on their mobile phones and computers, when their parents don't even know they're online,\" says Symantec's Bill Rosenkrantz. \"Remember, cellphones, PADs and video game machines all make it possible to surf the Internet. You don't have to sit in front of a computer screen.\"
And what are the kids doing on the Web? \"They're doing things, like downloading music, they're going to social networking sites, they're actually shopping online when parents don't think they're doing those kinds of activities,\" says Rosenkrantz. \"They're also, we think, doing some things with research papers and other kinds of activities with homework maybe where they're getting some information online and they really shouldn't be.\" Nearly a quarter of the kids (23 percent) might do things their parents would not agree.
So how does a modern parent deal with this type of situation? \"The first thing we strongly
recommend is that parents spend time with their children online,\" Rosenkrantz, says. \"Sit down with them and understand what they're doing. Secondly, have a dialogue about it. Have a dialogue about what's an acceptable activity, what's an unacceptable activity, and set some ground rules-time online, things you can and can't do. Really have those conversations. That's the most important .\" There are a lot of bad people on the Internet. That's why it's so important for parents to know what their kids are doing online.
42. The data(数据)in the second paragraph are used to show . A. parents don't exactly know kids' online time B. time spent online changes with children's ages C. children always spend too much time online
D. children spend more time online than their parents 43. What can we learn from the passage?
A. Parents are too busy to pay attention to their kids. B. Most parents know what their kids are doing online. C. Special home computers are being made by Symantec. D. Some kids surveyed may go against their parents' wishes.
44. In Rosenkrantz's opinion, the key to the situation is that parents should . A. know their kids' online activities B. shorten their kids' time spent online C. have a dialogue with their kids D. use security software in computers 45. What's the purpose of the passage?

There is an English saying, “Laughter is the best medicine.” Until recently, few people took the saying seriously. Now, however, doctors have begun to look into laughter and the influences it has on the human body. They have found that laughter can really make people healthier.
Tests were carried out to study the influences of laughter on the body. People watched funny films while doctors checked their heart, blood pressure, breathing and muscles. It was found that laughter has
similar influences to physical exercise. It increases blood pressure, the heart beating and breathing. It also works several groups of muscles in the face, the stomach, and even the feet. If laughter exercises the body, it must be beneficial(有益的).
Other tests have shown that laughter appears to be able to reduce pain on the body. In one test doctors produced pain in groups of students who listened to different radio programmes. The reason why laughter can reduce pain seems to be that it helps to produce a kind of chemical in the brain which reduce both stress and pain.
As a result of these discoveries, some doctors in the United States now hold laughter clinics(诊所), in which they try to improve their patients’ condition by encouraging them to laugh. Because of good influences, such clinics are very popular with all kinds of patients. Doctors have found that even if their patients do not really feel like laughing, making them smile is enough to produce beneficial influences similar to those caused by laughter.
Since laughter is so effective, try to laugh as much as you can. Believe it will do much good to your health. If you are not used to laughing in front of others, you can also smile as often as possible to others, because it can have almost the same influence.
