Most people think zoos are safe for animals, where struggles such as difficulty in finding food and avoiding natural enemies don't exist. Without such problems, animals in zoos should live to an old age. But that may not be true for the largest land animals on earth. Scientists have known that elephants in zoos often suffer from poor health. They develop diseases and behaviour changes. Sometimes, they even become infertile, or unable to have babies. To learn more about how elephants are affected, a team of international scientists compared the life spans of elephants born in zoos with those living outdoors in their native lands. Zoos keep detailed records of all the animals, such as birth dates, illnesses, weight and death. These records made it possible for the researchers to analyse 40 years of data on 800 African and Asian elephants in zoos across Europe. The team found that female African elephants born in zoos lived an average of 16.9 years while those in the wild lived an average of 56 years. Scientists don't yet know why wild elephants seem to be so much better than their zoo-raised elephants. Georgia Mason, a biologist who led the study, thinks stress and obesity (肥胖) may be to blame. Zoo elephants don't get the same kind of exercise they would in the wild, and most are fat.
Another finding from the study showed that Asian elephants born in zoos were more likely to die early than Asian elephants caught in the wild and brought to zoos. Mason suggests stress in the mothers in zoos might cause them to have babies that are less likely to survive.

Should we save pandas? Even though the number of giant pandas has dropped to the point where they are considered seriously endangered, some have suggested that it is not worth the efforts to continue trying to save the species. BBC naturalist, Chris Packham, made
this shocking statement to Radio Times Magazine: “It's not a strong species. Unfortunately, it's big and cute and it's a symbol of the World Wildlife Fund (WWF). And we pour millions of pounds into panda conservation. I think we should pull_the_plug. Let them go.”
Fortunately, not many people share this extreme viewpoint. Instead of just allowing the species to become extinct, panda conservation efforts are in full force, and you can help! Why not “adopt” a panda at the WWF or Pandas International? Both sites raise money for giant panda conservation. You can also help raise attention to this endangered species. The following ideas are from Pandas International: spread the word: share your passion to save pandas; sponsor or adopt a giant panda; sign up for monthly donations to Pandas International or another organization; consider a project for your class, if you are a student; or at your next celebration (birthday, holidays, etc.), ask guests to make a donation to help pandas, rather than bring a gift.
There are only about 1,600 giant pandas left in the wild. One of the biggest reasons that giant pandas are dying out is the loss of habitat. Pandas rely on bamboo for food, and the plant is slow-growing. In their native lands of south-east Asia, many bamboo forests have been cleared. This drives pandas farther away in search of food. Many die of hunger before they can get to the next forest.
Personally, I don't think that something should be given up just because it is difficult. After all, the panda is not endangered as a result of natural selection. Its habitat has been destroyed by our actions.

Steve said that in a moment his life changed from what restaurant he was going to take his clients (客户) to lunch to whether his daughter Katie was ever going to see her fourth birthday.
For three years Katie received a lot of treatment at the Nemours Hospital for Children in Wilmington, Delaware and with the help of wonderful doctors, kind nurses, whom Steve and his wife Michelle called heroes, Katie's leukemia was cured (治愈).

Stayathome kids are named “generation nini” in Spain. They are those adults who still live at home and are neither working nor studying. But the problem is by no means limited to Spain. It is a worldwide problem.
In Italy, they are known as “bamboccioni” or big babies. There nearly 60 percent of 18-34-year-old adults, still live in their parents' home, up from almost 50 percent since 1983. Once kept there by the love for their mama's home-cooked food, the economic crisis has seen a rise in adults left unable to hold down a steady job or afford a home of their own. Last year, an Italian government minister admitted that his mother washed his clothes and made the bed for him until he was 30. He demanded a law forcing young Italians to leave their parents'
home at 18 to stop them becoming hopelessly dependent on their parents.
In the UK, the government has made the term NEETS — not in employment, education or training for these children. In England alone the percent of NEETS aged 19-24 surged to 18.8 percent of the age group — in the last quarter of 2010, up 1.4 percent on the same period a year before. The number of British men in their 20s living with their parents has risen from 59 percent to 80 percent in the past 15 years, while the number of women has risen from 41 percent to 50 percent. The average age of the first-time house buyers is now 38.
In the US, the problem is known as the “full nest syndrome (综合征)”. Adults there are left struggling to support adult children who have stayed at home with student debts and facing few job opportunities in a weak economy. A recent study showed almost a third of American adults aged 34 and under are living with their parents.

As the proverb says, “Good habits benefit you all your life.” Indeed, a good habit is to me what water is to fish.
Entering the high school, I took delight in having fast food and ate too much. Consequently, I was so heavily overweight that I suffered a lot from my awkward appearance. What made matters worse was the fact that my classmates played jokes on me at times. From then on, I made up my mind to avoid snacks and meanwhile to take up jogging to lose weight. Owing to the timely changes, it was not too long before I did succeed in creating my new image. Only then did I start to appreciate the significance of forming a good habit.
To be honest, the change in my habit means a lot to me, which contributes to my success as well as helps me regain confidence.
