1.Scene 1:
1Pei-Pei: hello. How are you?
2Tess Coleman: hello. Pei-Pei.
3Pei-Pei: Anna, Harry, you are so big now. What happened? Are you happy for your mommy?
4Anna Coleman: About what?
5Pei-Pei: Oh, She is such a joker. Who is catering? Chinese food good luck.
6Tess Coleman: It’s all planned already.
7Pei-Pei: Okay. How about me?
8Ryan: Anna, I preordered the Peking duck.
9Anna Coleman: Joy.
10Ryan: well, I know that’s your favorite.
11Anna Coleman: whatever.
12Tess Coleman: oh, well, the wedding is in two days.
13Pei-Pei: think about it. Ok?
14Tess Coleman: ok.
15Pei-Pei: see you soon. Happy dining.
16Ryan: Anna, your door is underneath the back stairs.
17Anna Coleman: like I didn’t figure that out.
18Grandpa: stop groveling, man. Let her come to you.
19Ryan: she’d come with a hatchet. I think I will go check on that duck.
20Tess: Anna, do you really think that your surliness(粗暴) is the best way for you to get what you want?
21Anna: I am sorry, mom. I really have been stressing in school and I deserve every single one of those trips to detention. And I am going to apologize to Stacey Hinkhouse and Mr. Bates. I guess what I am trying to say is, I will try and do better, mom. I’ll really, really try.
22Tess: all right, what do you want?
23Anna: to go to this audition tomorrow that we can never have against the House of Blues.
24Tess: an audition, that’s great. Tomorrow? You mean after the rehearsal dinner?
25Anna: well, during.
26Tess: but “during”, you mean as “instead of”?
27Anna: technically.
28Tess: I need to talk to you right now.
29Anna: I am gonna pass on that.
30Tess: now!
Scene 2:
Tess: I am going to make one final attempt to try to understand what goes on in your head.
Anna: don’t treat me like your patients.
Tess: what?
Anna: all calm and reasonable. Let’s talk and I really want to understand.
Tess: I really do want to understand, Anna!
Pei-Pei’s mom: tsk, tsk, tsk.
Pei-Pei: oh, mama. Stay out of it, please. Mama.
Anna: ok. fine. They are gonna take one local band to play at Wango Tango. We were lucky to make this cut. Seriously, it’s once-in-a-lifetime chance, please. Why can’t I just go? Please.
Tess: now what I hear is that my special night means absolutely nothing to you.
Anna: I don’t have to ask if my band means anything to you. It’s totally clear that you think we are all noise.
Harry: look, I’m walrus.
Tess: I do not.
Anna: do too!
Tess: Anna, I let you practice in the garage. Anna, stop.
Anna: what?
Tess: let’s talk about what this is really about. Ok? This is about your dad.
Anna: mom, stop shrinking me. It’s not about dad. It is about the audition. You are ruining my life!
Tess: enough with the drama. Anna, high school is not that hard.
Anna: you couldn’t last one day in my high school.
Tess: I could, and I would do it without getting a detention.
Anna: oh, I am sorry, mom. I’m sorry that I’m the one thing in your life that isn’t perfect.
Tess: perfect? You think that my life is perfect?
Anna: oh, I know your life is perfect. Your perfect job, perfect boyfriend, perfect patients who worship the ground you walk on.
Tess: oh, honey, you need a serious and bracing reality check if you think my life is perfect!
Anna: you can cut me some slack just this once.
Tess: I am beyond cutting you slack, Anna. But you are not going to audition.
Anna: yes, I am!
Tess: no, you’re not!
Anna: why not?
Tess: because I said so.
Scene 3:
Pei-Pei’s mom: cookie?
Tess: this isn’t a really good time.
Pei-Pei’s mom: now a good time.
Tess: okay, okay, thank you.
Tess: Anna, for one day, the entirety of our life is not gonna be focused on you.
Anna: yeah, it’s all about Ryan now, isn’t it?
Tess: Anna.
Anna: get away.
Tess: honey.
Anna and Tess: a journey soon begins, its prize reflected in another’s eyes. When what you see is what you lack. Then selfless love will change you back.
Anna: whatever.
Tess: honey.
Anna: you okay?
Tess: yeah.
