Mogao Grottoes was built in the first year of Taihe (366 A.D.) in theEastern Jin Dynasty. It is said that a monk named lezun passed by and suddenlysaw the golden light shining, as if a Thousand Buddhas appeared. Lezun thoughtthat this was the holy land of Buddhism, so he went around to collect money andexcavated the first grottoes. Later, many caves were excavated one afteranother.
